Recently I've become fascinated by studying the Bible in Latin. Therefore, I've been looking at the Vulgate. I have a couple of questions, though. 1. Why are the Psalms numbered differently? For instance, Ps 122 in the NAS is 121 in the Vulgate. Why? The website I'm using has 150, but the numbering is still off. Vulgate edition 2. Speaking of Psalm 122/1, how would you say vs. 1 if you wanted to change the tense to "I will go to the house of the Lord"? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me.

For whatever reason, the Vulgate combines Psalms 9-10 into one Psalm, Ditto for 114-115. Then it splits 116 and 147 to get 150 total. Verse one, ibimus, "we will go" would be ibo "I will go." Most English Bibles translate that verb as a subjunctive, "Let us go." But the original hebrew could be translated either way.

From Treasury of Latin Prayers Lastly, a word about the numbering of the Psalms. There are two basic schemes, the Greek numbering and the Hebrew numbering. Until the Protestant Reformation, the Greek numbering of the psalms from the Septuagint was the universal scheme. Protestants, for various reasons, adopted the Hebrew numbering scheme, and, again for various reasons, most modern English Bibles these days use the Hebrew numbering scheme. The Vulgate uses this Greek numbering scheme and this is the scheme that I have used throughout this web site. However, due to the prevalence of the two numbering schemes, I have listed the psalm numbers in both schemes below as an aid to the confused. The Vulgate (Greek) numbering is first and the Hebrew numbering follows.

I believe one reason for this is that even though Jerome does refernce the real Hebrew text of the Jews it is very obvious that He falls inline with the Septuagint which was what he was hired to do. Remember the Bible was already translated in Latin. Many make the arguement that there were many faulty copies. Yet even hear they could have simply picked the best manuscript. Therefore it was Jerome's duty to make a translation of the scriptures that falls in line with the Catholic church. Jerome was reluctant about his duty and tried to rebel against the publishing of the "Apocrypha". Yet as a good Catholic he fell in line. Of course eventually the Papist had to hide even this translation from the public. a good and very concise explanation of this whole history is found at ww.chick.com see pamphlet "the attack!" if I am wrong it could be "attack!"
