Hi, I homeschool my daughter Darlene 15along with her second cousins, Ashley 14, Elyzah 7 and Aden 5. Darlene and Ashley have homeschool with me since 3rd grade. My daughter asked me to homeschool her after I took a needed break from teaching in the ps sytem for 20 years. I invited Ashley, my niece's oldest daughter to join us. That was over six years ago. We started with ACE and now only use ACE for math and science and use Gileskirk for humanities and Literature. Are any of you familiar with Dr. Grant's curriculum and lectures from his classical Christian school in Tenn. If not here is his web site: http://gileskirk.com/ "The Goal of Gileskirk is to provide a strong Humanities or Liberal Arts survey of the disciplines of history, literature, philosophy, theology, civics, art, music, and architecture in four great epochs: Antiquity, Christendom, Modernity, and American Culture (American history)." The girls got ACEd out in their first semester of 8th grade thus we switched to Gilekirk taking a class once a week with other homeschooers and having me suppliment their assingments. Last year they studied Modernity and presently are studying Christendom. I listen to the lectures with the girls and am learning with them. Dr. Grant is a wonderful historian as well as an author of many Christian books. Presently our homeschool family is in crisis. My niece, Michelle, the mother of my great nieces Ashley , Elyzah and baby Elahn and nephew Aden, passed away on Oct. 23rd. She was like a daughter to me and she was like a mother to my daughter Darlene. Each of us are grieving in our own ways. 1. Elyzah (7) Elyzah'sfaith in adults has been challenged as she was told through her mother's struggle with cancer that her mom was going to win the battle with this disease. Her childlike faith has suffered as she has faced so many changes over the last month. 2. Aden (5) Aden has a reduction of appetite and a reduction in engaging in "fun" things. He is not as eager to play on the playground but chooses to stay inside and build churches with his blocks and pray. Since the holidays began a silent cloud of depression has been hanging over him. 3. Ashley (14) After her mother's death, Ashley immediately broke out in shingles and had to be isolated from her siblings. This brought on panic and crying attacks which she deals with almost daily and sometimes hourly. 4. Elahn (2) Elahn started to grieve over the loss of her mother about a month before her death as she sensed something was different as her mother was no longer able to hold, cuddle and play with her. Elahn has bonded with my sister (her grandmother) and calls her "Mommy." While she may be too young to understand, she no doubts feels the loss of her mother. 5. Darlene (15) Darlene is my daughter. Michelle was like a second mother to her and when Darlene was going through a self-identify crisis as an adopted child, Michelle reached out to her and together they formed a special bond. Darlene is now grieving the loss of this very special "mom" in her life. 6. My sister, the children's grandmother and Michelle's mother came over today crying saying she had to ask the clerk in costumer service to remove an item she put in layaway something she was purching for her daughter for Christmas. She planned on buying Michelle a new CD player to listen to Christmas Music and Bible readings while taking chemo as she was suffering from breast cancer. The cancer spred to her lungs in July and she passed away on Oct. 23rd. Life has been very hard. Ashley, the oldest, who is very close to my daughter has not been with us more than a handful of days since her mother died. She wants to go to ps next fall which means more estrangment between her and her siblings as well as my own daughter. I almost died on the eve of Dec. 1 when I collaspe from an eternal bleedout resulting from having a polyp removed during a lower GI/colon exmen. My husband found me as I was passing and called 911 immediately. I was in ICU for a few days and insisted on returning to homeschooling upon release as to keep things normal. The kids just lost their main caregiver their mother, I could not bare to have them think they may lose me as well. As a result of returning too soon I ended up in ER a few days later and now am on bed rest. My sister is now doing the homeschooling with the younger children and Ashley is doing the math and science pace under the guidance of a Chistian woman who just lost her husband do a gun accident six months ago. Please keep us in prayer. Suzanne

Hi, I thought I'd join here. My name is Patty H. I live in NC. We are in our 2nd yr hs'ing our 15 yr old. We are going to start into the highschool yrs soon, which is a little intimidating but we are trusting God to guide us thru it. We are going to start using ACE. If anyone has an opinion-good or bad-on this curriculum, I'd like to hear it. He is interesting in becoming a game warden (or wildlife resource officer, I think they are called also). Look forward to meeting you all

I should open folders more often. I can't remember if I gave my intro here or not. I'm Lissa, married to my high school sweetheart. We have four children, DS 15, DD 13, DD 12, and a DS 5. This is my first year of homeschooling my 15 y.o and my 13 y.o is coming home to learn in about two weeks or so. I've always held an open mind about homeschooling and been drawn to the idea but never took the plunge. I just wished I would have done this years ago and not listened the family critics and my own doubts!! I'm so glad to find this board for support and enjoy the newsletters from HSLDA.

My name is Christina Kennedy. I am a mother of two daughters, ages 12 and 13. I home school my 12 year old daughter and will home school my 13 year old next year. I am married to a wonderful man named Jason, am a stay at home mom with college education in computers and paralegal work, and am now enjoying remodeling my newly bought home. My husband works as a broadcast engineer for 11 years at a local NBC affiliate station and I plan on finishing my computer degree after the kids go to college. We are non-denominational Christians but I was raised First Assembly of God and my husband was raised Methodist. I home school because #1 I always felt it was the right thing to do but never had the funds, #2 I have lost faith in and do not like the teachings of the PS system, #3 My youngest has Asperger's and the school refused her help for over 3 years until I had enough and helped her at home (she is 100% on track now), and I will be home schooling my oldest because she is failing school and going down hill with her attitude very fast. I feel she would be better off at home with a better, home schooled education from her family. I am glad to have found this site and God Bless. Christina Kennedy

Hi, I'm Stephanie. I'm a re-joiner! I currently HS my 12 yo daughter and 11 yo son and have for let's say the better part of six years. I've been away from CW for about a 18 mos. as we have moved THREE times during this time period - from S. Texas to our beloved WA state, back to S. Texas and just last week to the Salt Lake City area. Here, we plan to stay. I hope to get (and stay) plugged in to the CW HS family to encourage and be encouraged. Blessings to all.

Hi there. I am new to forums (at least in responding, I do read them) so I hope I am responding correctly. Anyway, we have homeschooled our three children since our oldest was 5. She is now 12, with a 10 year old sister and a 7(almost) year old brother. I believe our choice to homeschool is the best way to help our children grow into amazing adults, who will be able to thrive and make a difference in the world. With that, I will add there are some mornings it is difficult to get going; however, we still get more done than they would in ps. We have recently moved from Texas, which we loved and I am reminded daily how much they wish we were still there. Now, we are in sw Missouri, living out of boxes and hoping we will all adjust soon. "Bloom where you are planted," comes to mind and hopefully we will soon feel at home and "blossom." Emily

Hi, I'm Pam. I homeschool using a Bible-based DVD curriculum. My son, who is 17 and a Christian, requested homeschooling in 8th grade and we started in 9th. He's in 11th now and doing wonderfully! I always felt called to either putting him in a Christian school or homeschool. We can't afford a Christian school and I didn't think I could ever homschool because I don't have a college degree But when my son kept asking, I checked into it with our county school system and found pages of correspondence schools that they accept. I was so excited! I've had my nose buried so deep in another section on this board, that I just realized this one on homeschooling is here! Glad I found it.

Hi everyone, I am proud to say that just this week I have made the decision to homeschool. My 10 year old daughter is now in the fourth grade and my 4 year old would be starting kindergarten in the fall. I have been struggling with this decision for years but I KNOW now that it is time. The Lord has placed it on my heart in such a huge way over these past few months and I have a wonderful, supportive husband. I am very excited to start this journey. I am also grateful to have found this forum. You will all be hearing lots more from me in the future.......be warned........I will need lots of support. Glad to be a part of things and to meet all of you. Have a blessed day. Donna

I am mom to 3 girls, ages 6, 4, and 22 months. I've planned to homeschool since I discovered it was possible -- when I was in college, before I even considered being married. So I've been a "wannabe" homeschooler for a long time. We started "formally" homeschooling our oldest this fall, for kindergarten; this year is the first year we'll have to actually file our paperwork, as kindergarten is not compulsory in our state (Ohio). I look forward to learning and sharing the journey with you all. Mom23girls

Hello, I'm a MD hs mom of one 15yo dd. My dh & I have hs'ed her since she was in the 2nd grade. She's now entering the 10th grade...time sure does fly! She's an avid reader (as am I!), which helps her tremendously with school. She's very active in our church, working with children in nursery and VBS, singing in the Youth Ensemble as well as the Adult Choir, is an active member of the church youth group, is presently preparing to go on a missions trip to SC with the rest of the youth group, and then to Trinidad with a group from our church (including dh & I), to help local missionaries with VBS and bible studies, teen nights, etc. Basically, she's a well-rounded young lady, and a total joy for dh & I. I'm a fairly new member to this site, but have enjoyed what I've read and learned thus far. Look forward to getting to know the rest of you. Blessings! HS Mom in rural MD

Hi, I'm Dawn. Right now I am homeschooling two 11th graders. I've homeschooled for 5 years. I was also a public school teacher at one time and having taught in both classrooms, will attest that higher quality learning goes on in the classrom at home! My kids love to homeschool. We travel a lot and incorporate that into their learning - plus homeschooling gives us the freedom to do so, any time of the year. We've enjoyed a lot of success with home school and it's kept our family close. We like curricula by Alpha Omega Publications.

Am homeschooling gifed 10 yr old with attention defficit - what fun! - and a 16yr old in her last year of high school & suffering CFS. Yes, I'm still sane - but only by God's grace. The 10yr old is very able academicaly & totally uninterested. She is strong across the fine arts so we cop some flack because we work to her strengths & she does a lot of music & art. The kid reads above her age level & her maths is better than mine so I figure we're doing something right. The 16yr old begged to come out of the public system & mostly schools herself but it was her choice & she loves it. Jehane

Hi, everyone. My name is Tina. This will be my 5th yr homeschooling our 16d & 15d. I always felt like God wanted me to homeschool the girls, but dh said "no." Our oldest got sick in 6th gr and missed more days than ps would allow. We were told that she was advanced to the next grade only because of her CAT score and because she was on the honor roll. We were told that if she was sick the next yr we would have to put her in the "homebound" program. Dh said I could try homeschooling for 1 yr. We have been doing it ever since. It has not been easy, but as another hs mom said, "the worse hs day is better than a great ps day." or something like that. Our youngest dd hated ps and still doesn't like hs, but when given the choice, she had rather hs any day. She had a math teacher that told her she was stupid. She proved that teacher wrong! When our oldest dd is sick, we don't worry about how many days she misses. We just go with the flow. Sometimes the flow has been over rapids and sometimes the flow has seemed to stagnate, but it has always been worth the ride.

Blessed greetings to all. My wife, Loveda, & I have just started homeschooling our 10 year old daughter who is in the 5th grade this year. She attened the school at our church for 7 years, but we got tired of the micro managing over the teacher's head being done by the principal so we are homeschooling our daughter this year. Our son who has Aspergers Syndrome is still in public school.

Hi, I'm Mendy. My husband and I discussed our dream to educate our children at home...before we ever HAD children! We feel like the Lord placed it in our hearts, as I don't know anyone, close to me, that homeschooled. I was a hyper-active child who (in my opinion) was 'pushed through the system' called public school. I want better for our children. I want them to have time to 'burn up some energy,' and be kids! (not little robots) We are going into our fourth year of homeschooling our eldest boy - he's seven. He's an excellent reader, great in math and eager to learn. Even our 4-year-old is 'shocking' us at how quickly this 'tutoring method' can work! I was going to do more preschool with him this year (he's constantly saying, "Mommy, can I do school work too?"), but have bumped him up to Kindergarten quickly, as he was way beyond the other and was getting bored. He already does a lot of math (addition, counting, etc.) that his older brother does. They're never too young to learn! The most wonderful thing about homeschooling is, we can allow our boys to be who GOD made them to be! They are both beautiful and unique. We, excitedly, can't wait to see who/what they turn out to be when they reach adulthood. I know that God has great things in store for them. We had a neighbor who did nothing but tutor public school kids in reading. Her house was constantly 'abuzz' with children coming and going. It's sad, really, to see that people are sending their children to school all day, expecting them to be taught, and then having to hire private tutors to help their kids catch up! It burdens my heart just thinking about it. I've even thought of tutoring children once my kids are a bit older and can read more on their own. Or even tutor adults who cannot read. Being a one-income family now, homeschooling is a sacrifice financially, but one we gladly make. I heard someone call homeschooling, "The Great Edventure!" It truly is an adventure and education all rolled up in one. It is a joy to be with our children and watch them grow in mind, body and spirit. What a wonderful gift we have been given!
