Ok I'm jumping in here. Don't know what to say or think yet as I am not currenly enrolled in school anywhere yet. I am 42 and going to go to school somewhere for something. Tired of being broke and not qualifying for many jobs that I am well capable of simply because I don't have a piece of paper that says I am qualified.

Does anyone have tips for reading journal articles online? I really have a hard time with that because they're long and split into two columns. I end up printing the article so I can read it faster. I say I'm saving it for another class, but seriously, will I use these again? I'm not sure. And printer ink isn't cheap!!

I print mine too, Michelle. I like being able to underline and mark as I go along. Plus, it's easier on the eyes than reading everything from the computer. That cross-eyes me after awhile!

Karie, I much prefer printing my journal articles, but I had to print about ten articles for this class, and that didn't include the long journals, like the 30-page article.  I think I'll still print the articles and scan the longer ones.
Ok, I just have to vent and say that my professor is EVIL!  I just finished a 75 question test and all I can say is WOW. This one question I KNEW the answer as soon as I read the question, but that answer wasn't on the test, so I had to pick the next best question (of course, I knew that, but what a headache!) There were terms on there I'd never heard of before. This was supposed to be the easiest class, and I'm still going to do well, but after this test, I need an aspirin!!

I also print articles. If you want to save on the ink, maybe you can print it as a draft (sometimes that option exists). To save on ink and paper, I'll sometimes print two pages on one piece of paper - but the type might be a little small.

Another saving paper tip. If the article is 20 pages, place 10 pieces of paper in the printer, then when they are printed, flip them over to print the rest of the article on the back side.
I try to keep mine saved as pdfs to read on the computer if at all possible. I prefer the paper in my hands though...

Hello vicbhe.
Its been a very long time since I read or posted anything to Crosswalk forums as I have been pursuing my bachelors in social work. Lord be willingly I will graduate from Malone University spring '09 at the age of 54. I just sent off my applications to two grad schools.
I understand about being passed over though qualified to do the job becasue you dont have that piece of paper. That was one of the things that drove me into career counseling and then back to school. I started off at community college to knock out as many gen ed classes as possible. I was blessed to graduate Magna Cum Laude, or Magnificient Lordy, as I like to say. I have made the deans list here three semesters in a row and I give God ALL the glory for it is HE who is stimulating these brain cells to do the work. I just have to cooperate with Him and do the work.
What has helped me the most is having a goal and confirmation from God through my pastor that I am on the right path. Becasue I attend school in another city from where I live I am under the "watch care" of another pastor. God also used him to confirm that I am following where He is leading. That has been my solid foundation during those down times when I wanted to throw in the towel (and all those expensive books).
Its been an uphill battle at times but its been worth it. Since I am single with no kids, that has made many of the sacrifices easier (lost my apt with most of my belongings and my car). But I have learned much through those loses that will help me to have more empathy with those I will be priviledged to serve. Although I will be glad to move out of the dorm and be back in my own place with my own kitchen!!!! I will probably grocery shop for three days and cook non-stop for seven!

I'm up temporarily from the abyss that is academia.
We had a test on two chapters of the Management Information Systems textbook that nobody did well on. There was just way too much info packed into those two chapters. Does anyone know of a way to study for tests like that without memorizing the whole book? The questions seemed randomly plucked from the chapters. Not only do we have to study for weekly tests on two chapters, but also have to read the following two chapters and write out assignments from them.
Thankfully, the prof is allowing us to retake the first test. But who knows if we can do that with the rest of them.

We have tests that come from lectures plus book readings. As I read the chapters, I take detailed notes on what I think is important, then re-read my notes and highlight key words and phrases from my notes. After our first test, I had a better idea of what notes to take from my reading.

I try to get a sense of what the professor thinks is important. Did they spend a lot of time talking about one thing over another? Look over your class notes and compare them to the questions that appeared on your test. What kinds of questions did he/she focus on?
If it is truly random, then yes, you'll need to make sure that you know the book. I'd make sure that I know all of the major points, key terms, phrases, and definitions. That way if the professor comes up with something that is obscure, you'll still be able to make an educated guess.

Steve, I've got a couple of suggestions but for the sake of time... do you have a study guide that the textbook publisher puts out? How about looking online to the publisher's site... I had one test recently where the questions were exactly from the study guide. Like rgod said, look at what the professor is looking for. If all else fails, pick a letter and for every question you have no idea on, pick that letter. A lot of times on these tests, there are two questions you can immediately eliminate, giving you a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

Thanks for the advice and tips, y'all!
The prof sent an email saying that he modified the testing from now on. He cut the test in half, and added an at-home writing assignment on a business case study. This sounds much more manageable. I'm still in panic mode because I had almost zero time this weekend to work on this stuff, so I'm scurrying to finish all the writing assignments by Wednesday. This has to be the most accelerated accelerated class so far. 
Oh and he's letting us retake the last test because it went so badly for everyone. I felt really stupid when I was taking it, but felt better when everyone else in class felt the same way...lol. I have until Wednesday to take the test. It's online.
I think I'll try some of your tricks for studying and test-taking. I'm not one for highlighting, as I tend to overhighlight. Sometimes I will write out a list of definitions. That seems to help with the memorizing.

Thanks for the prayers, guys.
We decided as a class to go back to the full test instead of having a writing portion. We found that we are adding about three hours of extra work by doing the writing assignment, so we figured we had to study all the info for a half test anyway, so we may as well take the full test.
This week is not as loaded with homework, so that will be a little bit of relief.
I haven't had a lot of time to study, so that's a big part of the stress and not doing as well as I have hoped for this class. I've been helping a friend build a bedroom for her daughter and that's been taking up most of the last three weekends. Hopefully the project will be done tomorrow.

Today, something amazing happened...I got offered an internship for when my time comes and I haven't started grad school yet! That's unheard of, around here anyway. Grad students who have completed the first year have a hard time finding interns placements, and this one was just offered to me by the supervisor of the counseling center. I was stunned! She asked me to get in touch with her the semester before my internship will begin and she will set it up. It's in rape crisis, which isn't my target area, but I know it will be invaluable experience and there are often kids involved there too, which is my focus. Plus, I have to believe God set that in motion.

That's fantastic, Karlie. I agree, it'll still be a good experience for you, and the more variety of experiences you have, the better. I worked in substance abuse for about 7 months and I learned a LOT that I still use, but will probably never go back into that field. So yeah, that was probably God-ordained. My two internship options at my current company are the Residential Alternative Placement (runaway) house , and CINS/FINS that work with ungovernable teens, and even take them to court.
