OR...it's just taking your supply a little longer than he'd like to catch up with his appetite. That's okay. And it's okay for him to have a bottle if he needs one. What is the goal? A healthy, growing I-man? Right? Then you get to that goal however you need to get there, even if it means he doesn't nurse all the time.

You're doing great, Erin!

AMEN!!!!!

Also...how often do you nurse him? Do you nurse him on a schedule or on demand? I am asking just because some babies need to eat more often..especially premies.

How many wet diapers does he have in a day when he only gets you and no bottle?

You are doing great.....no matter what!

I nurse on demand, but its roughly every 2-3 hours. He's supposed to get meds every three hours so we loosely use that schedule that we came home from the hospital with, but if he wants to eat, he gets to.

He has 8-10 wet diapers a day and has 3 or 4 poopy diapers.

Right now he's only getting one bottle a day while I'm at work.

well I have a question.

When Ava does go to daycare (two weeks from tomorrow) should I pump and give them a few bottles to keep her happy for the day , or should I give them formula to feed her? I don't really know what would be best for her, for me I would be a bit weary about feeding someone Else's baby the breast milk that they had pumped for her but I really don't know if that is a issue or not.

How many days or part-days is she going to be in daycare, and will you be able to pump while you are at work (presuming that's why she is going to daycare)? Because if you don't, your supply will decrease quite a lot, and you will likely end up having to give her formula then anyway because you will end up only having enough for the feeds she has from you.

childcare workers will not have any problem whatsoever with you providing breastmilk for your baby. The only concern they will have is if she has enough to eat for the day. =)

I would send bottles of breastmilk clearly labeled. I dont think it would be an issue them giving her milk to someone else. I would definately try to giver her expressed breastmilk or your supply will truly suffer.

I am going to be working half days for the first week, but after that it will be 9a.m-5p.m, and the daycare is about a hour away from where I work, so it will be more like 8a.m-6p.m, and she will be there 5 days a week

I didn't think I was going to pump while at work, but if I need to I probably should.
Thanks

You will definitely need to pump while you are at work; even with doing this your supply may still drop a little, because pumping doesn't stimulate the breasts like your baby nursing does. But some here have done this, and kept being able to give their babies breastmilk for up to a year, so just try it and see how you get on. If you end up having to give some formula, it's not the end of the world, but just have a go and see how things work out. But you will need to pump during the day - or your supply may go down by half or even two-thirds.

Hey Erin, don't you go to a Pumping Working Moms yahoo group or something like that? Maybe you could post the link for Bee?

Bee if you can, try to pump right before starting work (like in your car or a private room), again on a morning break, lunch break, and afternoon break. If you can, that ought to really keep your supply up. And, also nursing Ava in the evenings and weekends. If your supply is really good now, maybe try to get a head start on pumping.

Well, ladies....I think Jimmy might be weaned. I haven't nursed him since naptime yesterday. I'm a little sad. He is prolly our last baby. I dunno, I might nurse him at naptime tomorrow. I like nursing, but I like the freedom too.

Give yourself a big pat on the back, Stina. You've done a great job with nursing.

Bee, if you want to continue breastfeeding you should not give Ava formula unless absolutely neccessary. Your body will start making less milk since it thinks its not needed. I was most definitely pump at work. I'm currently back and work and I dont pump the days I work from 8-12, I pump right before I leave home and then feed Isaac as soon as I get home. I live 5 minutes from my house. But since you have such a drive, I'd at least pump in the car before and after work. A good book that I found on pumping and working is "Nursing Mother Working Mother" it is an excellent resource on schedules, getting started, etc. I dont have a Yahoo group or anything I am apart of but the American Pregnancy Association has some excellent forums and resources (I know we arent supposed to recommend other forums but I hope that since this is a very specialized forum its okay). Also, workandpump.com, is a good resource. You CAN do this. You CAN work and continue to breastfeed Ava, it may not be easy, but it can be done.

Okay thank you so much Erin, I do really want to avoid give her formula.
Will it be enough to pump right before I go into work, and then right after? I know I probably would be getting a hour lunch during the day, but I am not for certian, I will know when I actually start.

I'm the one that used to be part of a yahoo group. It's called pumpmoms (just do a yahoo search for that and you'll find them). On the whole they are a wonderful supportive group of women (there are a few stinkers, but you get that in any group of people ).

That's right, thanks Kat. I knew one of you ladies went to that Yahoo group.

Bee, anything you can pump is great. I had a bad schedule at work, but I was still able to pump and nurse for 7 months, supplementing with formula from about 4 months. You can always do that too. Just leave the can of formula with the daycare, and if they run out of your breastmilk, they can give her that. Not being able to take breaks and lunch will probably make it hard to keep your supply up. But, just pump what you can for as long as you can, and you have formula to fall back on.

I'd say when you work all day it might be a bit too long to just pump before and after, I was actually referring to the 1/2 days (didnt you say you were doing half days for a bit?). But I would say whatever you can do would be better than nothing. When I work all day I pump before work, and at an early lunch, then mid afternoon. That gets me three pumpings in in a work day with only taking one unscheduled break. (Small office, no actual "breaks"). Since you have the drive you do I'd also pump before I left maybe? I only drive 5 minutes and Isaac eats as soon as I get home usually. Do you have a good pump?

I know I've disappeared the past couple weeks. I've had to re-do a ton of bookkeeping stuff and I had to do a self-imposed ban on forums in order to catch up! Anyway, I'm almost done and thought I could come back for a bit - I'm not reading everything I missed of course, so just jumping in blind here....

I think Jacob is going to be self-weaning very soon. On Saturday he absolutely refused to nurse for 2 of his feeds. He just arched himself away from me and screamed. I felt totally rejected. I just about burst into tears. This is my last child. I don't want him to self-wean. I want to be the one to do it. I know that sounds selfish. Anyway, I finally brought out a bottle and a huge smile lit up his face. So, being the mean mom I am - I tricked him into nursing. I held him as though I was going to nurse but showed him the bottle - then did a quick nipple switch at the last second. It worked! So far since then he's nursed ok. He hasn't been thrilled about it, but he's done it.

I was planning to drop one feed in about a month's time, but now I'm worried that if he consistently gets a bottle one feed every day that he's going to refuse to nurse all the others times. Ugh.

Aww, Tammy. I've done that trick before too. I didn't know it worked on older babies! I totally know what you mean. Jimmy is prolly our last baby too, and I'm torn between weaning or not. Well, hopefully you can keep tricking him until he likes the boob better.

Tammy I totally know what you mean, I thought I wanted to do child led weaning but then I was really really sad when Mary weaned herself! I felt rejected too.

We are actually doing really well with it though, her face absolutely lights up when she sees me without a bra. She doesn't ask to nurse or anything but when she sees her milkies she smiles really big like she is remembering something really happy; it melts my heart.

I have a question though... I haven't nursed in probably three or four weeks now (total guess, I really don't remember) but in the last few days I am starting to feel really full. Not engorged full, it isn't uncomfortable it just feels like it's time for a feeding. Is that normal? Will it go away at some point?

I leaked milk for several weeks after Nathan was weaned, especially during certain times, and I know other women have as well.

I'm sorry for you ladies who felt rejected by the child weaning. I hope you take time to remind yourself what a wonderful job you've all done in feeding your babies.

I on the other hand, felt ready to dance a jig when my son was weaned (and a little guilty for feeling so happy), so I can't specifically relate, but I am always sorry when my CW friends are hurting over something.

I signed up for that Army of Women, and they're doing a study right now, but I don't know if I qualify. It said

I thought this was funny. Yesterday I finally got some well fitting nursing bras in the mail, (oh the joys of clothes that fit!) and was trying them on. Rhys couldn't take his eyes off of me!! He was like staring me down! I thought it was funny. I had just nursed him too. I guess I can't take my eyes off of food I like either.

Speaking of bras, I have a ton of nursing bras that don't fit, won't ever fit and I want to get rid of them. They are in super good condition, some are practically new. I have two bravado's one is a L++ and the other is a L+. I have some 38DD's, 36DD's and one 36F. If anyone can use them all I ask is for the cost of shipping them out. They are clean and washed (actually they are hang drying right now). The one Bravado has some lanolin staining in the front, but it is clean. I've washed them all in the washer on the hand wash cycle. Just PM me.

Sideways - I am usually happy to be done nursing too. But that's probably for 2 reasons - I decided when we were done with our 1st 3 babies, not them. And 2nd - this is my last baby, so I will be a bit sad to be done as I know it's the last time I'll ever nurse.

So far he's been doing better. He's not thrilled about it, but he's not totally rejecting it either. I am worried that once I start weaning he'll be totally done instantly and won't wean gradually.

Erin- I will be working half days for the first week, but after that it's back to normal 40+ hours a week, I will try and pump on all my breaks.

Tammy- I am sorry that he is trying to ween himself, I hope he does not continue to want a bottle
