Thanks but NO thanks. like i said going at it alone is the best way to go!! and if i do reach my goal i'll feel a whole lot better about my self.

yall people are just too ignorate to see that true music lies inside a person. no coach, trainer or teacher, can help you find that.
take my grandfather for instant. he's been playing guitar since he was 7 years old. never had any lessons. he's AMAZING. he's traveled all over the united states, playing music. he's even played with the easter brothers. if he can do it. so can i!!!

Well, Godspeed then. You asked for input and you got it. If it doesn't suit your needs, then by all means discard it.

One other thing that's huge for young musicians is networking. When a youngster asks for feedback they should always be gracious in receiving it, even if it hurts. You never want to burn a bridge.

i was gracious! i said thank you and i mean it!!
you don't know me, you don't know how i feel so you have no obligation to say that i wasn't thankful. because i am.

a word of advice i may be a "youngester" but i have all whole all more sense than you about people. Don't judge so quickly, and think that all artists fall in the exact catogary as everyone else. some people reach their dreams differently. and don't try to think you know how some else is feeling and how they feel about what you said. cause you DON'T know! i was very thankful and i took all the advice everyone gave me. but it's not the path that i want to follow. God has a path for me, and i'm gonna let him lead me through it not anyone else.

Uuummm...that's kind of what I'm talking about. Getting defensive is not being gracious. Again, if you ask for someone to critique you and they say "nice voice but you have to change your shoe laces", then just smile, say thank you and leave it at that. Arguing with them after you asked for their advice is not gracious, even if their advice is silly (in your opinion).

The bridge I was talking about was not the one in this thread anyway, by the way. I'm talking about your future. Networking is at least as imprtant as talent (IMO).

so please no more talking about the future and the "business" i just want to know if people like my voice or not!!

Yes you were.

You asked for tips on improving your voice and said that you wanted to have a singing career.

If you don't want to do it later, that's fine. We're responding this way because you said you did want to pursue it.

i just want to know if people like my voice or not!!

My answer to that question and the way I frame that answer depends on the reasons why you're asking it.

If you want to just do music as a hobby and sing for friends, not taking it seriously, it's fine.

If you want to do it professionally, it needs a lot of work.

Like i said before i'm only 14. YES music is something i really want to persue right now but in 2 years i might want to be a doctor. Goodness sakes i'm a teenager we change our minds. trust me in 2 months i went right liking pink to hating it!! i change and so does the thing i want to do in life, everythings not set in stone.

yes i know my voice needs work... but i can do that myself. i've improved greatly in the past year working with my voice and i intend to improve more as time goes by but by me, not by someone else.

Thanks thought!!!

This is not a responce to Singergirl246, but to those others who've posted here.

Maybe the gentle coaching is not the way to go? Maybe we should have just said that she wasn't exibiting the kind of talent one expects from someone who is going to be a professional singer, but that with enough hard work and Providence she might be able to have some sort of career in the industry.

Also, as I'm sure you guys already know, there are 14 year olds out there who know exactly what they want to do with their lives and are working their tales off to get there.

As I said, I'm not responding to you at all. You feel you were being pushed, so in keeping with your request not to comment on your "future", I have nothing further to say about your singing.

Again, to the others who posted, maybe responding to teens who want to know what others think of their singing is a mistake. Maybe the only way to avoid a flame war is to give the grandma response, "you're the greatest I've ever heard"?

Eh, it depends. We have no reason to doubt that she's working hard. She's right, she is 14 and nothing says that she has to be set on one career path. I'm more concerned that she'll wind up spinning her wheels (or worse, thinking she's better than she is) because of her decision to eschew guidance.

I hang out in the science forum most of the time. I get bored on most of the other forums because everybody's so nice.

Besides, I got that response my entire childhood about academics and about playing the piano. Boy was I in for a shock; I still bear a bit of resentment and disappointment from it. It can be just as destructive to give a kid too much praise as it is to not give enough. Optimistic, constructive criticism is important. I know you're being facetious, but I'd get myself kicked out of a thread for being harshly realistic before I did that.

How do you know that? What criteria do you use to judge yourself? What things do you do well and what things can you work on?

Also, how recently did you make the recordings on your myspace page?

-Dan.

No, I'm saying there are kids out there who know they want to be professional musicians, who aren't going to change their minds, and are taking the proper steps (i.e. working hard, getting instruction, winning awards, scholarships, playing/singing in honor groups, sitting in with well known, well respected professional musicians, etc.) to make it happen. It's not the work ethic but commitment I was refering to.

Hehe! I think there needs to be a Swords & Sorcery forum so we can discuss how Glorfindel gets ripped off in every stinking movie!

Nice! But, I totally understand that you weren't being defensive.

Nobody said anything about a teacher or coach "finding" talent in you. It's about going to someone that has more experience than you do to help you get the most out of what you know is there.

WOW! The Easter Brothers?! .... and who are they?

These forums are actually shared across several Christian web site owned by the same parent company. Down at the very bottom of the page, you can find a link to some of them. I believe that CCM Magazine and SG News also link to these forums.

That aside, your comments illustrate the big-fish-small-pond principle we were describing before. Within your sphere of influence, the Easter Brothers may be a big deal - everybody in your family may know who they are and what they've done. They may even be known within the SG community, but in the grand scheme of things, they're not particularly well known or significant. They may be very talented, but so are lots of other people.

I live in Oregon. Southern Gospel music ain't big here. Different cultures. That's okay.

There are careers in Gospel Music for you. Probably would've helped our advice to you if we'd have known that up front.

Still, I'm sure there's limits and a lot of people in your neck of the woods going after those jobs, so any advantage you could give yourself would help.

Yes, there's improvement. Of course, I didn't think you were bad in the first place. I don't think anyone else did, either.

Great song to work with. Shows that you are listening to some broader styles. What you're singing is not an easy song to "nail." You performed it well. Of course, I'm sure sitting in front of a webcam adds some "nervousness" factor too.

Keep up the work. You have talent. You're developing it. That's a good thing.

Ever thought of maybe just recording an MP3 w/o video that might take away some of the "nervousness factor"?

Good stuff. Thanks for posting that.

I agree. Really tough song to sing, especially since the original is so amazing (IMO). Not a bad voice. Quality instruction would be a plus. Trying out for honor groups (state & local) might be a smart move. If you're accepted there you'll get some vocal training. If not, you can get some insight as to what you're lacking. For more jazz experience you can look for "open mic" opportunities in your area. It would be a great way to gain exposure to jazz and individuals who have been around the music world a while.

Your pitch and tone are better, but I still think you could gain a lot by finding a voice teacher and learning proper breath control. You shouldn't have to take two breaths on "my heart is drenched in wine" or "but you'll be on my mind." Poor breathing is why you can't hold lines very long and probably also why you're coughing. Once you get the hang of breathing properly, everything else gets considerably easier.

What sorts of exercises are you doing?

-Dan.

i've been doing scales everyday, and i'm currently working on a musical right now so i've been singing for that.
